Biodiversity informatics has become an important tool in facilitating education, research, product development, bio-resource management and conservation; and an important element in developing the country’s bio-resource potential. Nurturing a national bioinformatics platform is therefore, a necessary undertaking whose importance cannot be overemphasized in Sustainable development.
Biodiversity information is an integral part of environmental resources that provides a basis for sustainable environmental management planning, policy formulation and decision making. Development sectors related directly or indirectly to biodiversity are dependent on basic scientific data that are collected and collated to enable efficient achievement of objective planning. Uganda as needs to recognize, protect and manage this natural resource base by improving the knowledge and developing technology, designs, systems, approaches and strategies to contribute to a safer and healthier environment for all Ugandans through establishment of a National Biodiversity Information Facility that facilitates free and universal access to data and information pertaining to Uganda’s biodiversity. UgaBIF aims to contribute to Uganda’s sustainable development by facilitating access to biodiversity and related information on the internet through promotion of data and information sharing. UgaBIF is the National Node for Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Upcoming Events
