 In pursuance of its mandate of promoting the development and application of science and technology for economic transformation of Uganda, Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) has the obligation to honor scientists and technologists through awards or presentations for outstanding achievements and contributions in the various fields of science and technology. The specific purpose of the - To recognize merit of outstanding individual contribution of Ugandan men and women to the advancement of science and technology and its application to improving the quality of life of the people of Uganda
- To encourage inventiveness and innovativeness among Ugandan women and men.
Against this background, and following the pronouncement by His Excellency, The President of the Republic of Uganda, in the year 2004, of the need to recognize scientists through Presidential awards, UNCST established the Presidential Science and Technology Excellence Awards for meritorious achievements in scientific research, technological innovation and education and training. Within this framework, the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) calls for nominations of outstanding Ugandans in meritorious achievements in high-level scientific research, technological innovations and scientific and technological education and training for the year 2010. The awards include: The Presidential Science Excellence Award The Presidential Science Excellence Award is given in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements in basic sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Zoology, Geology, etc.) and Social Sciences. Achievements under this award include any of the following: - Research results of high value and relevance to socio-economic development
- Original discoveries including indigenous knowledge (IK), development of new knowledge, concepts and theories that have impact on society.
- Development and/or popularization of science and technology including use of illustrative techniques (publications, science museums, science centers, and other resourceful and imaginative mechanisms to demystify science and technology), science leadership, scientific competitions, and other promotional activities.
The Presidential Scientific Innovation Excellence Award The Presidential Scientific Innovation Excellence Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievements in scientific and technological innovation and application in the fields of agricultural sciences, veterinary sciences, biomedical sciences, engineering sciences, biotechnology, earth sciences, materials sciences, military sciences, space sciences, information and communication sciences and other related sciences. Achievements under this award include any of the following: - Physical inventions and innovations which have actual or potential for industrial application and commercialization as well as the potential to solve societal problems.
- Novel industrial designs and methodologies that are significant and have actual or potential for industrial application to benefit society.
The Presidential Science and Technology Education Excellence AwardThe Presidential Science and Technology Education Excellence Award is given in recognition of outstanding achievements in promotion of science and technology education. Achievements under this award include any of the following: - Science and technology teaching (model teachers, mentors, administration)
- Support to science and technology education and training (funding, institutional building, founding of institutions, management, educational planning, advisory services, e.t.c)
- Evaluation and setting of science and technology education standards (appraisal of education and policy setting, education standards, publishing of education and training materials, etc.)
